EXPLOITING COMMUNITIES IN THE NAME OF GOD: WHAT CAN WE DO TO FIGHT AGAINST WOLVES IN SHEEP SKIN?
J Atwoki Birungi in Ottawa

In coming days I shall post thoughts on dealing with the scourge of criminal expoitation under the guise of religious engagement. I do not have a quick answer to this serious question especially when our political leadership has opted to look the other way. There is a precedent. The magnet to mainstream Christianity in many countries in Africa went hand in hand with education supplimented by some health provision rooted in medicine. Looking at Kenya and Uganda for example, primary schools were either Anglican or Roman Catholic. Nearly at every church site there was a clinic. Mainstream churches have to take the lead again. They have been quiet needless to mention they have abdicated from the roles above. They have reneged on the important role of moulding the character of youth. We need to get the mainstream critically engaged again. I will be working on a more substantial answer. I know that if we do not do something about the wolves in sheep skin, our lambs will continue to suffer.
